Professor Carneiro holds a doctorate in social anthropology from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, as well as post-doctorates from the Université Paris X (Nanterre), Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, and the UNICAMP Institute of Economics.

Her experience spans the areas of anthropology, rural sociology, and the sociology of science, mainly on the following topics: family farming, rurality, youth and gender in rural areas, country/city, nature and society, science and public policy in biodiversity conservation areas, and family farming.

In 2012, she published Ruralidade Contemporânea: modos de viver e pensar o rural na sociedade brasileira [Contemporary Rurality: Ways of Experiencing and Thinking About the Rural in Brazilian Society]; she edited this book, and also contributed articles.

She coordinated the Research Group on Science, Nature, Information, and Knowledge (CINAIS).
