Professor Wilkinson holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Bristol (1965), a master’s degree (1977) and doctorate (1982) from the University of Liverpool, and a postdoctorate in economic sociology from the University of Paris XIII (1995).
His research is in the field of sociology, with an emphasis on economic sociology, mainly on the agri-food system, new quality markets, consumption, markets and social movements, restructuring the global agri-food system, and the impact of China.
He was a researcher for the European Union’s FAST Program. He has also carried out research with the OECD on biotechnology and development. He participated in several ECLAC studies on the dynamics of agriculture in Latin America, coordinated the Global Project on Mercosul Integration for PROCISUR, participated in various studies with the FAO/UN, and was also team leader for the HLPE Biofuels report.
Professor Wilkinson was a CNPq consultant for promoting science and technology in family farming. He has participated in various research networks involving international institutions on the topics of fair trade, global value chains, and geographical indications, and coordinated a collaborative CAPES/COFECUB effort for four years. He participated in four CAPES/COFECUB projects, and coordinated two.
At CPDA, he teaches economic sociology and the world agri-food system. He has conducted research with a wide range of public and private institutions and coordinated studies on the agro-industrial sector in a number of research projects with the network of researchers in the UFRJ Department of Economics and the UNICAMP Department of Economics.
He has published over 150 books, chapters, and articles in English, Portuguese, Spanish and French. In 2019, he was listed among the top 2% of researchers at Academia.edu. He has over six thousand citations on Google Scholar.
