Professor Teixeira da Silva holds undergraduate degrees in history and education (UFRJ, 1976), a specialization in Brazilian history (UFF, 1977), a master’s degree in Brazilian history (UFF, 1981) and Magisterwissenschaft (FU/Berlin, 1983).

He is a Doctor of Social History (UFF, 1991) and a CAPES/DAAD fellow at the Free University of Berlin, and holds post-doctorates in political and social history from USP, the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin, CAPES/DAAD) and at Free University of Berlin (TU Berlin/CAPES fellow/DAAD/Germany, 2011 and 2013).

He was a member of the Pro-Africa and Pro-South Committees of CNPq, editor of the Ciência Hoje journal (SBPC, 1989–1999), and a columnist for GloboNews (1994–2014) and for the Carta Maior agency.

He has been awarded the following Brazilian awards and medals: Order of Naval Merit, Friend of the Navy, Order of Tamandaré, Victory in World War II, and Peacemaker.

He founded the Present Time Study Laboratory (UFRJ), and is a member of the CAPES/DAAD Committee and the CAPES Political Science Committee as well as a consultant for the Rio dos Navegantes exhibition at the Rio Art Museum (2019).

Professor Teixeira da Silva publishes in the areas of economic and social development, and received the Jabuti Award for the best book of 2014 for his book Atlântico, a história de um oceano [Atlantic: The History of an Ocean] (Civilização Brasileira).
