With a PhD in urban and regional planning from IPPUR/UFRJ, master’s in international political economy from the University of Warwick (England), specialization in political ecology and rural development and undergraduate degree in economics and international relations from the University of Reading (England), Professor Furtado works on research and extension projects related to climate change and the capitalization of nature in Brazil, energy and mining, and women and megaprojects.

She has experience in the areas of political ecology, environmental sociology and city and regional planning, and primarily works on environmental conflicts, climate change, multilateral financial institutions, extractive industry, and social movements.

She is a researcher at the State, Labor, Territory, and Nature Laboratory at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro’s Urban and Regional Planning Research Department (ETTERN/IPPUR/UFRJ) and the Study Group on Social Change, Agribusiness, and Public Policy (GEMAP, at CPDA/UFRRJ).
