Professor Ferreira holds a degree in social sciences from the Fluminense Federal University (1999), and a master’s degree (2002) and doctorate (2007) in social anthropology from the PPGAS/National Museum at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

His field of study includes sociology in general, the sociology of development (with emphasis on political economy, social classes, and the State); the sociology of insurgency (forms of domination and resistance, social movements and insurrections/revolutions, trade unionism and anarchist theory, indigenous movement and organizations, autonomy and self-government); social ecology (with emphasis on the study of energy, power, and socio-environmental conflicts); political anthropology (focusing on domination/resistance relationships, the State and ethno-politics, rituals, symbolism, and political action); the anthropology of territory; territorialization processes; land and territory conflict; indigenous lands and interethnic conflicts.

He is currently involved in the Cultural Ecology and Energy Politics research project (with support from FAPERJ and CNPq).

He is also a member of LACED/Brazilian National Museum/UFRJ, OPPA/CPDA/UFRRJ, and leader of the Power Study Center (CPDA/UFRRJ).
