Professor Schmitt holds master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), and completed an international PhD internship at the University of California Santa Cruz’s Environmental Studies Program. She also holds a bachelor’s degree with teaching certification in history from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. She has served as an advisor and consultant to non-governmental organizations as well as government and multilateral bodies on issues related to formulating and implementing public policies for family agriculture, agroecology, and sustainability.
Professor Schmitt has experience in the areas of sociology and rural development, mainly focusing on the following topics: family farming, agroecology, public policies, technologies, networks, social movements, local markets, and food and nutrition sovereignty and security. She is part of the research team at the Observatory on Public Policies for Agriculture (OPPA).
